Back in Steve’s early days – the 1980s – he studied with Wes Montgomery protege Ted Dunbar (another Indianapolis thumb player) at Rutgers / Livingston College, and while under his tutelage, got to jam on jazz standards & blues with the great Kenny Burrell.
Says Steve: “I’ll never forget Kenny’s encouraging words to me about my blues playing. I didn’t have the jazz vocabulary together yet, but he could hear that I was feeling every note I played and praised me in front of a class. He didn’t have to. That was invaluable to me as a young guitarist wanting to make a career for myself. It gave me the confidence to keep pushing ahead. Thank you Kenny!”
